Math News:
General Information: The students practicing for the Math24 Tournament will have their final competition this week. Three students will be chosen to compete and one student will be chosen as an alternate. Math24 is our first competition on February 17th. The screening test to earn a practice spot on the Math Team will also take place in the upcoming week. Students interested in making the Math Team should be using websites and other resources to be practicing problems in preparation for the screening test. Students that are chosen will begin practicing for various math competitions taking place in February and March. Each grade will have representatives on the Math Team.
Sixth Grade Math--Students are working through chapter 5. The focus of chapter 5 is fraction operations. We have begun with addition and subtraction of fractions and mixed numbers. The students will then use those skills to solve equations containing fractions. Students should practice their multiplication facts. Math fluency will play an important role in your student’s success in this chapter.
7B Math--Students are working on a chapter on percent. Students need to practice their benchmark fractions and percent equivalents. These will help with their estimating skills and coming up with a reasonable answer. Students should have a calculator they are comfortable using (other than their iPad) to solve percent problems.
7A Math-- Students are working on chapter 10. The focus of this section is probability. Students are creating charts, drawing tree diagrams and calculating probability. Students will continue in chapter 10 all of next week.
Eighth Grade Math--Students are working on proportions in Chapter 4. Students are expected to develop the ability to set up proportions that apply to real world situations. Once they set up the proportions, students will use their math skills to solve the proportions. They will also find unit rates and determine better values based on the unit rate.
Algebra--Students will finish chapter 6 on systems of equations. Once the chapter is concluded, students will begin to prepare in class for their semester exam. The semester exam will be held on Wednesday, January 18th during third and fourth hour classes. Students have been given a notecard to have for the exam. Students may write any formulas, definitions, and procedures on the notecard. Students will be allowed the notecard and a calculator for the entire exam. If you have any questions, please contact Ms. Bozio.
