The boys’ basketball sign up and cheerleading sign up will be in Ms. Bozio’s room over the next couple of weeks. Practices will take place in December with the games beginning in January. If your student is interested in participating, please have them sign up with Ms. Bozio. Boys basketball will be coached by Mr. Phil Ciano and the cheerleaders will be coached by Mrs. Nicole Lunceford. Informational meetings for both will be held at the end of November.
Classroom Basket: Sixth graders have a theme of “Taste the Rainbow”. Each student was given a color of the rainbow. Students should bring in any items that are that color or are related to that color. Red could bring in a Red Robin gift card, blue could bring in books that have blue in the title, orange could bring a basketball, or the color choice could bring in a movie with the color in it like Black Stallion. Please be creative and donate what you can.
Math News:
6th Grade Math---The sixth graders continued with decimal computation. We will work on estimation, ordering and division with decimals. Students worked in math stations to practice some skills and worked on how to write mathematical explanations. Explaining what they were thinking and applying mathematical vocabulary is a challenge for the students, but it is an important skill they need develop.
7A Math—We began chapter 6 this week. This is the first of the chapter that the students did not pre-test out of any of the skills. We will be covering estimating percent, percent change, tax, interest, and applying those concepts to situations they may come across in life, like tipping the server when they go out to eat.
7B Math---Students will begin next week with an assessment on decimal operations and equations. This should be the students primary focus over the weekend. The assessment will include all 4 operations, equations, comparing and ordering positive/negative decimal numbers. Once we have the assessment on decimals we will work on fractions.
8th Grade Math—We have begun our unit on equations. We covered like terms and the Distributive Property. We will build on these skills and work through solving multi-step equations. Students need to do neat careful work, show all steps, and understand there is in order that needs to be followed to solve the equations correctly. Practice will make perfect in this unit.
Algebra—Algebra started chapter 5 covering slope and rate of change. Students continue to work on making connections between logical thinking, visual representations, and written work. The computation part of the Algebra is easy, making connections is more challenging. Students should work situations containing independent and dependent variables, constant and variable rate of change, positive and negative relations that can be graphed. These are found in their notes, in their books and in their online resources.
