Math Minutes
Friday mid-term reports go home. Please take a look at your student’s grades. If you have a question about your student’s progress in math, please do not hesitate to get in contact with me. If it is not urgent, we can discuss it the following week at parent-teacher conferences. I am looking forward to seeing you all there.
6th Grade Math—This week the students learned how to study and prepare for a math test. They were given instructions on accessing online practice tests and what to study, along with a study guide containing vocabulary and a skills checklist. Students should practice for 15-20 minutes a night to be prepared for Monday’s test. Once the assessment is over on Monday we will be moving on to Chapter 2 where we will begin our journey into Algebraic thinking. Chapter 2 covers most of the Expression and Equations standards for the 6th grade curriculum.
7A Math—We will begin by reviewing the concepts of chapter 2 followed by the chapter 2 assessment on Wednesday. We will then begin Chapter 3. In this chapter we will spend a significant amount of time on the computation of rational numbers. Students will need to be very careful, persistent, and neat to be successful in their calculations. Please be sure your student has a calculator they are comfortable with and know how to use. Your student needs to be able to calculate decimal numbers, fractions, and mixed numbers using their calculators.
7B Math---The week will start with the Chapter 1 Assessment on Monday. Students’ were given a skills list/study guide as well as a practice test to help them practice and prepare for the test. On Tuesday we will we will begin Chapter 2. In this chapter we will be working with integers, visual representations of numbers and number lines.
8th Grade Math—Chapter 1 will conclude on Monday with the first assessment of the year. The assessment will include a non-calculator computation section and a section where calculators may be used. Chapter 3 will be our next chapter and we will begin it on Tuesday. In this chapter students will be responsible to several concepts coming from 3 of the standards. We will work with equations and expressions, geometry and the number system strands.
Algebra---Inequalities is our focus. Students are working their way through the chapter 3 notes and practicing the skills required to solve inequalities. Students are also practicing how to put answers in correct notation. Next week students will work to finish the last 4 sections of the chapter so an assessment can take place before parent-teacher conferences.
